Lana Millan

I am a pediatric oncology nurse at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. I work both in the outpatient oncology clinic and the inpatient side. I have worked there for 10 years but have been a nurse for 13 years. I attended the Ohio State University for three years and then transferred to Mount Carmel College of Nursing where I received my Bachelors of Science in Nursing.

I am the Summer Program’s Health Camp Director, but to the campers I am known as the "Camp Nurse". This will be my eighth summer working at North Shore. I have been fortunate to be able to take my kids to camp. They have both been at camp with me since they were infants. They both started in Little Explorers and are now old enough to be in all day boy groups.

I love the work that I do over at Children's Memorial Hospital but it is also nice to work with healthy children...it's a different part of nursing that I don't deal with everyday. It's great to know that I will be a part of a program that will bring so many smiles to children every summer. I believe we (the staff here at North Shore) have always focused on the individual camper. We provide them with a safe and healthy environment – physically and emotionally. The camp administration spends a great deal of time training and developing the staff with this as the primary focus. Our success every year at camp comes with keeping the kids safe. In my case, this involves the training of the staff to make quick assessments and decisions to bring the child to see the nurse.
